Expansion of Japan's Munitions Industry is a Threat to Regional Peace

The munitions industry, which serves as the backbone in the realization of Japan's remilitarization, is rapidly expanding. The production capacity of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and others is being expanded, and they are actively advancing into the global arms market.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has seen its annual munitions order volume, which was on the scale of 500 billion JPY, expand by more than three times. The personnel in the aviation and aerospace sectors, which stood at around 7,800 at the end of 2024, will be increased to about 10,000 within this year. Kawasaki Heavy Industries is also reinforcing its personnel and establishing a more modern production system in accordance with the massive increase in military expenditures. A certain company that manufactures missile engines is pushing ahead with the construction of a new munitions factory in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, with the goal of completion in 2028.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries are feverishly stepping up the production and export of various weapons and equipment, including warships and missiles, under the cloak of "joint development and production". Last year, Japan also concluded a warship export contract with Australia, and it was agreed that three of them would be built and provided by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

War criminal enterprises such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, which were in charge of the Japanese imperialists' weapons production during the Pacific War in the last century, have completely revived.

This is the result of the current ruling forces of Japan tearing down the control line that had prohibited arms exports through the revision of the "Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment" and its operational guidelines.

Constitutionally, Japan is deprived of the right to belligerency, the right to participate in war, and the possession of combat forces. Because of this, it could not publicly produce offensive weapons and equipment, and it has acted as a "peaceful state" by putting forward the so-called "Three Principles on Arms Exports", even if only as a formality. However, behind the scenes, it has systematically increased military expenditures and run amok in the development and production of lethal weapons.

In 2014, viewing even the hollow shell of the "Three Principles on Arms Exports" as an obstacle to the realization of their military power status, they concocted the "Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment", the core of which is to allow the export of lethal weapons to countries jointly developing arms and equipment, and the export of non-combat equipment for purposes such as "disaster relief, transportation, vigilance, surveillance, and minesweeping" to other countries.

Entering this year, they completely abolished this and opened a legal path to boundlessly sell arms and equipment to any region of the world. Japan's munitions companies have ushered in a "period of prosperity" just like in the past.

The Japanese ruling forces are justifying this by claiming it is to enhance deterrence for defense amidst the most severe security environment since the war, or that it is to protect common values and interests with allies, but this is deception and falsehood. Clamoring about external "threats" as a pretext for arms expansion is a stereotypical trick of Japan.

The Japanese government pouring colossal funds into the development of the munitions industry and swinging open overseas markets for war criminal enterprises is aimed at realizing their long-cherished ambition for overseas expansion and reinvasion.

Now, Japan's production of weapons and equipment is increasing at a rapid pace, and its security policy is rapidly shifting towards a far more offensive one.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party proposed to revise three security-related documents within this year and strengthen the long-range strike capability and continuous operational capability of the "Self-Defense Forces". Accordingly, military expenditures are breaking all-time high records, and the introduction of cutting-edge offensive military equipment, including the latest stealth fighters, and the establishment of a military operational posture in the realms of space, cyberspace, and electromagnetic waves are being accelerated.

Under the signboard of strengthening counterattack capabilities, they are elevating their long-range strike capabilities. Last March, for the first time in the country, they deployed an upgraded version of the Type 12 surface-to-ship missile with a drastically extended range and the Type 25 high-speed gliding projectile that flies at high altitudes at supersonic speeds to Kumamoto and Shizuoka prefectures, respectively. Recently, they deployed the launchers of the Type 12 surface-to-ship missile and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft for determining target locations on one of their islands in the Pacific Ocean.

In order to ceaselessly master their attack capabilities, the "Self-Defense Forces" are staging large-scale military exercises not only on the mainland but also overseas. Under the specious name of strengthening alliances, they unabashedly participate in multinational military exercises and openly fire off missiles.

Japan, which still wears the shameful stigma of being a war criminal state, running amok in the expansion of its munitions industry constitutes an undisguised threat to regional peace and stability.

There is a saying that he who digs a pit for others falls into it himself. The Japanese ruling forces must ponder over this. If they continue to run wild so indiscreetly, they will be buried in the grave of history along with their excessive ambitions.
