According to reports by local activists, the communists belonging to the World Anti-Imperialist Platform who were illegally detained while staging a peaceful protest against the “France‑Africa” summit from May 11 to 12 were all released by the Kenyan authorities on May 15, bowing to public pressure.

The detainees had received no warrant and no formal charges were brought against them, yet they were forcibly held in police stations in Nairobi. As international condemnation mounted and Kenyan human rights organizations together with progressive legal practitioners responded resolutely, the authorities were eventually compelled to decide on an unconditional release.
