Ebola Outbreak Causing Anxiety and Concern

Recently, the World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in relation to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

Less than six months after the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared the end of the Ebola outbreak on December 1 last year, the disease is rampant again. Last September, the 16th Ebola outbreak occurred in the central region of the country.

What caused this outbreak is a new variant of the virus. Concern is growing because there is not yet a special vaccine to deal with it. Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda and other neighbouring countries are strengthening their anti-epidemic measures to prevent the influx of the infectious disease.

Ebola virus disease first broke out near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1976. Hence the name Ebola virus. The disease rapidly spread to countries in central and eastern Africa at the time, claiming numerous lives. Its fatality rate was 90%, the second highest after rabies. This even caused an Ebola virus phobia among people.

Three years later, in 1979, Ebola virus disease broke out again in Sudan, killing 400 people. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the use of poorly disinfected syringes resulted in 300 infections, 90% of whom died.

In June 1994, a Swiss botanist who dissected a dead chimpanzee in a national park in Côte d'Ivoire became severely ill a few days later, and test results confirmed that he was infected with the Ebola virus.

Ebola virus disease also spread across Africa and worldwide between 2014 and 2016, causing over 28 600 infections and more than 11 300 deaths.

A few years ago, Ebola virus disease was among eight diseases that the World Health Organization predicted would cause a global pandemic.

It has already been revealed that this disease is transmitted through the blood and body fluids of infected people or animals.

When infected, severe headache, high fever and muscle pain first appear, followed by the formation of coagulated blood clots in the body organs. Systemic pain, vomiting and diarrhea persist, and finally the immune system and micro blood vessels are totally destroyed, leading to bleeding through the eyes, nose, mouth and ears and death. The incubation period is 2 days to 3 weeks.

Health experts recommend avoiding handshakes, thoroughly washing hands with soap and water, properly disinfecting object surfaces, and strictly avoiding contact with confirmed cases to prevent infection with this deadly disease. Medical personnel should wear personal protective equipment when approaching confirmed cases, and the deceased must be buried only by people equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment.

Many countries are raising their awareness of the spread of Ebola virus disease, known as the disease of death.
