(Korean Central News Agency) Russia Directing Efforts to Ensuring the Country's Strategic Security Russia is directing efforts to strengthening its national defence capability to ensure the country's strategic security. On the 12th, a test launch of the “Sarmat” intercontinental ballistic missile was successfully conducted in Russia. The test results confirmed that all design and technical characteristics are correct. It is reported that this missile has a range of over 35 000 km and its accuracy is twice as high as that of other missiles. It also has the capability to overcome all existing and future missile defence systems, and its payload is reportedly more than four times that of the missile said to be the most powerful in the West. Experts assess that this missile surpasses the Soviet missile complex “Voevoda”, which the West regarded as an object of fear during the Cold War, in terms of capability, and that when deployed in actual combat, the combat capability of Russia's ground-based strategic nuclear forces carrying out the mission of war deterrence will be markedly enhanced. Just as yesterday, Russia today regards nuclear deterrence as an inseparable component and cornerstone of national security and is systematically developing it. President Putin congratulated the service personnel who successfully conducted this test launch, and stressed that Russia has successfully developed various medium- and long-range missiles, nuclear-powered unmanned underwater craft and cruise missiles, and hypersonic missiles in accordance with its plan for developing nuclear forces. He said that the work to renew the deterrence capability in Russia has been resumed since the early 2000s and has been conducted without interruption, and that frankly speaking, at that time Russia was not at the level it is now and went through a very difficult period. He added that after the United States withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002, Russia had to give deep thought to its strategic security assurance, proceeding from the new reality and the need to maintain a strategic balance of power. In fact, since the 2000s, the manoeuvres of the West to isolate and weaken Russia in all aspects have become more vicious. While expanding NATO eastward, it militarily threatened Russia and also increased the degree of political and economic pressure. Thus, Russia saw that it must strengthen its nuclear deterrence preferentially for the security of the state as well as for social stability and the smooth development of the economy. It has meticulously drawn up a plan for developing nuclear forces and attached great importance to its implementation. As a result, Russia's nuclear deterrence capability has reached a very high level. The “Oreshnik” ground-based intermediate-range missile complex, which can carry a nuclear warhead, has already entered combat duty. Now, the development projects for two complexes with small nuclear-powered devices are being pushed forward at the final stage. They are precisely the “Poseidon” unmanned underwater craft, said to be unique in the world, and the “Burevestnik” cruise missile with a global range. Russia has also developed the “Kinzhal” air-launched hypersonic missile. This missile has been on combat duty since 2017 and is also being used in the special military operation. Now, work is continuing to improve the performance of this missile in terms of increasing accuracy when equipped with a non-nuclear warhead. In 2004, the development project for the “Avangard” intercontinental ballistic missile complex began. Already in 2019, this complex entered combat duty. Nuclear deterrence has become a reliable shield that firmly guarantees the security and sovereignty of Russia. However, Russia's stand is to develop its nuclear deterrence capability rapidly and without stagnation. President Putin clarified this recently at an award ceremony held at the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology. He said that the achievements made by the Soviet Union in the field of missile development remain indispensable to this day, and affirmed that Russia will renew and develop its strategic nuclear forces and will develop more powerful missile complexes. Russia is paying attention not only to its strategic nuclear forces but also to strengthening its conventional armed forces. It is equipping its units with newly developed modern weapons and technical equipment, and is conducting intensive training under realistic combat conditions to enhance the combat capability of the service personnel. Not long ago, the Baltic Fleet conducted a naval gunfire exercise in the Baltic Sea, in which the participating missile ships repelled the attacks of “enemy” air strike means and fired naval guns at maritime targets, successfully destroying all targets. Russia's efforts to safeguard the country's security by strengthening its national defence capability are continuing.
