NATO's Military Threats Condemned, Growing Danger of Nuclear War Asserted

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, at a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries of the Security Councils of the Collective Security Treaty Organization member states on the 26th, condemned NATO's military threat manoeuvres.

He asserted that new challenges and threats are emerging in the area of responsibility of the CSTO, and that it is a fact without any exaggeration that the military exercises being conducted in Europe are aimed at Russia and Belarus.

He stressed that the main threat to the CSTO arises from NATO, which is frenzied with revanchist and militaristic madness, and the “civilized European” countries belonging to its bloc.

He mentioned that Russia is taking measures to minimize the danger of NATO's increasingly active military moves, and that the recent successful test of the “Sarmat” intercontinental ballistic missile and the training on the use of nuclear forces will dampen the “curiosity” of Western strategists and make them soberly think about the possible consequences of an adventuristic policy towards Russia.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, at a press conference on the 26th, expressed concern that the danger of nuclear war is growing.

He noted that the risk of a head-on clash between NATO and Russia not only exists but is growing, and this could lead to a direct military conflict between nuclear powers.

He revealed that NATO member states have long officially proclaimed NATO a nuclear alliance, and that the nuclear weapons deployed by the United States under the signboard of joint nuclear missions have become assets that can be used jointly not only by NATO's nuclear powers but also by non-nuclear countries against Russia.

Spread of Various Infectious Diseases Requiring Heightened Vigilance

Various infectious diseases are now spreading continuously worldwide, arousing the concern of the international community. The most serious is the Ebola virus disease, which has a very high fatality rate.

Many countries are on edge in connection with the recent reoccurrence of this disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

According to the World Health Organization, since the Ebola outbreak occurred again in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the number of patients has continued to increase. The affected area is a region that is greatly confused due to persistent armed conflicts. As medical workers are also fleeing due to the dire violence, serious difficulties are created in preventing the spread of infection and treating patients in time.

Not long ago, the WHO Director-General stated that the rate of spread of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda is outpacing the response rate, and asserted that immediate measures must be taken.

The African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention warned that besides the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, other African countries are also at risk of being affected by the Ebola virus.

Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and others are reportedly particularly at risk.

Following last year, many countries are again experiencing a crisis this year due to the widespread transmission of measles.

In South Africa, more than 1 350 people nationwide were confirmed as measles patients in just the first 17 weeks of this year.

This is reportedly more than 7 times the number of cases that occurred in the first 18 weeks of last year. The majority of the patients are under 14 years old.

In Japan, the number of measles patients is increasing at the fastest rate since 2020, causing growing anxiety among residents.

In Bangladesh, more than 190 children died in just over a month after measles broke out in mid-March. The government of this country considers this the worst measles outbreak in decades and is taking emergency measures.

In Uganda as well, measles is spreading in over 20 regions since the beginning of this year, and 75% of the patients are children under 5 years old.

In this country, more than 10 000 people contracted measles last year.

Measles has also broken out in Latvia, and the number of people who have come into contact with the infected is reportedly quite large, so the risk of spread is high.

Measles patients are also increasing in New South Wales and Victoria in Australia. In addition, various infectious diseases are continuously spreading in all parts of the world.

In Vietnam, nearly 40 000 cases of dengue fever have been registered since the beginning of this year. The majority of the patients are concentrated in the southern region.

Mpox is spreading in Sindh Province, Pakistan.

In connection with unusual skin disease symptoms appearing among newborn babies, tests conducted by the provincial health authorities confirmed infection with the Mpox virus.

Several people contracted anthrax in the western region of Uganda. It is reported that handling dead animals in an unclean environment was the cause of the outbreak.

In the southern region of Vietnam, more than 17 000 people contracted hand, foot and mouth disease in just the first three months of this year. This is nearly double the number compared to the same period last year.

Cholera continues to spread in Zambia, and since August last year, the cumulative number of patients has reached about 1 100. Dozens of areas, including the capital Lusaka, are affected.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is also experiencing a crisis due to cholera. In this country, more than 2 000 deaths were recorded due to the spread of cholera last year.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated that the cholera outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is at its worst level in 25 years, and asserted that emergency response measures are needed.

Meanwhile, since Hantavirus cases occurred on a cruise ship sailing the Atlantic Ocean last April, many countries are closely monitoring its spread.

When infected with this virus, symptoms such as fatigue, fever and muscle pain initially appear, followed by symptoms like headache, dizziness, chills and abdominal pain.

Low blood pressure, intestinal bleeding and acute kidney failure may occur.

The fact that there is no specific treatment is increasing the sense of anxiety among people.

Recently, a person died of Hantavirus in Colorado, USA, and it was revealed that his infection was unrelated to the infection on the cruise ship sailing the Atlantic Ocean, causing unease among Americans.

Many countries are heightening their vigilance over the spread of infectious diseases and are striving to strengthen their rapid response capabilities.
