Korea's Taekwondo Is Truly a Spirited and Vigorous Martial Art

Reverberations of the Demonstration Performance Given by Our Taekwondo Demonstration Team at the Opening Ceremony of the 10th International Martial Arts Games

The 10th International Martial Arts Games were held with splendour. The Taekwondo demonstration performance given at the opening ceremony, consistent throughout with high skill—the highly difficult technical movements and strong might of the members of our Taekwondo demonstration team—aroused admiration among the spectators.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said as follows:

“In cherishing and glorifying our own things lies Korean national pride, and in it lies true patriotism that displays the dignity of my country, my fatherland and hastens its prosperity and strength.”

More than 3,000 athletes, coaches and others from over 40 countries and regions including our country took part in this competition, which conducted contests in various martial arts events.

Our Taekwondo demonstration team, composed of masters and instructors with rich experience and high degrees, gave a demonstration performance at the opening ceremony of the 10th International Martial Arts Games.

How high the interest in the Taekwondo demonstration performance was can be seen from the fact that on the day the opening ceremony was held, far more people came than the seating capacity. It is reported that not a few of them had come from places hundreds of kilometres away.

The opening ceremony reached its climax with the Taekwondo demonstration performance of the members of our Taekwondo demonstration team.

Here, the demonstration performance of Master Wang Myong Guk, a people's athlete whose pattern movements were flawless in the accuracy of execution and in vigour and who smashed pine boards with extremely difficult movements, and the combined hand power of Instructor Song Nam Ho drew the popularity of the people.

When the 20-minute demonstration performance ended, people rushed forward vying with one another to ask the masters to sign the pine boards that had been smashed and to have photographs taken together. It is said that some people came up to the masters, took them by the hand and earnestly asked that their children too be taught Taekwondo.

In fact, the opening ceremony was supposed to end with a folk dance performance following the Taekwondo demonstration. But so great was the impact of the Taekwondo demonstration performance that the people who had come down onto the floor of the gymnasium would hardly move, and so the opening ceremony ended with the Taekwondo demonstration performance.

The Taekwondo demonstration performance, a traditional martial art imbued with the wisdom and soul of our people, truly caused a great stir.

The Chairman of the International Oriental Martial Arts Federation said with excitement: “I have seen the finest demonstration. Their ability is truly outstanding. In particular, the instructor who showed hand power at the close smashed all the tiles with the different parts of his hand—that is truly remarkable. I too have trained in many martial arts for decades, but Korea's Taekwondo is truly a spirited martial art that makes one's mind sharpen. I filmed the demonstration performance with my mobile phone and sent it to my colleagues. Everyone must see Korea's Taekwondo demonstration performance.”

The Secretary-General of the International Jikun Do Federation also could not conceal his excitement and said:

“Korea's Taekwondo demonstration performance highlighted the opening ceremony of the 10th International Martial Arts Games. I express my thanks to the Taekwondo people of Korea who splendidly adorned this opening ceremony with an excellent Taekwondo demonstration performance. In the future I will closely cooperate with martial arts organizations including the International Taekwondo Federation and actively contribute to the development of the International Martial Arts Games Committee.”

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee of this competition, who is also Chairman of the Kyrgyz Taekwondo Federation, came even to the hotel where the members of our Taekwondo demonstration team were staying and said: “The Taekwondo demonstration performance was truly excellent. It became an occasion that clearly showed us all what genuine Taekwondo is and who genuine Taekwondo people are. Truly, I learned a great deal while watching the Taekwondo demonstration performance this time. There is a martial arts faculty at the sports university in Bishkek, and if Korean Taekwondo masters were to come here and give lectures on theory and practice, I believe its significance would be considerable.”

The Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee of the competition, who moistened his eyes, moved by our Taekwondo demonstration performance, said in a sincere tone: “The Taekwondo demonstration performance given this time is truly excellent. This is the first time that Korean Taekwondo masters have given a Taekwondo demonstration performance in Kyrgyzstan. The Taekwondo demonstration performance given this time drew the popularity of the spectators from beginning to end, and the praise for it was tremendous. I think this Taekwondo demonstration performance became an important occasion that further heightened the Taekwondo boom in Kyrgyzstan. Taekwondo is a very good martial art that cultivates people not only physically but also spiritually.”

The members of the Organizing Committee of the competition also said unanimously: “At this competition contests were held in many martial arts events, and among them the most wonderful event is Taekwondo. Compared with other events, Taekwondo is certainly a very superior event in its might, vigour and spirit. At the opening ceremony there were demonstration performances of many martial arts events, but the demonstration performance of the Korean Taekwondo masters was the finest and it stirred the heartstrings of the spectators. I would like to express my thanks to the Korean Taekwondo masters for coming to this event. It is fortunate to have made excellent Korean friends.”

Thus, the Taekwondo demonstration performance given this time became a meaningful occasion that once again clearly displayed to the whole world the excellence of our traditional martial art Taekwondo, the high ability of our masters and the prestige of the home of Taekwondo.

In the Vanguard of Creating New Teaching Methods

So That They Possess High Practical Ability

The Chongjin University of Mining and Metallurgy is actively reflecting in its teaching content the problems raised in reality and, at the same time, substantially conducting experimental and practical education so that students possess multifaceted knowledge and high practical ability.

The officials of the university have well equipped the conditions for experiments and practice, and are closely combining theory with practice to raise the students' cognitive and practical abilities together.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has splendidly arranged a mining machinery practice ground so that students may be well versed in the various machines and equipment used in coal mines and mines and be able to solve by themselves the problems raised at production sites.

As a result of equipping the mining machinery practice ground with real objects and models, the effectiveness of the students' practice has become clearly apparent.

Using the equipment provided in this practice ground, the students are making the knowledge acquired theoretically their own through more vivid experience, while at the same time cultivating the practical ability to promptly solve the problems raised in reality. This teaching method, a research-type teaching method that makes students active learners and inquirers, is proving highly effective in educational work.

Their experience shows that when the Party's idea of attaching importance to education is upheld and educational conditions and environment are ceaselessly improved, students can be excellently brought up as practical-type talents equipped with high creative ability.

Directing Efforts to Foreign Language Education

The Sariwon University of Technology is achieving successes in the work to raise the foreign language level of students.

The university has worked out a step-by-step plan in keeping with the ability and the age-psychological characteristics of the students, and is then applying scientific study methods and carrying it out substantially.

In foreign language education, along with knowledge education, it is exploring and applying effective functional education methods composed of listening, speaking, writing and reading, thereby heightening the study atmosphere and having students approach their studies actively and purposefully.

The teachers attach importance to preparation in foreign language education while rationally organizing study groups, and actively use the method of having students present talks in the foreign language on themes related to the lecture content. At the same time, they have the students ceaselessly acquire the knowledge they have learned through the process of conversing in the foreign language in daily life. As a result, the students' foreign language level is rising markedly.

Furthermore, the officials of the university organize foreign language conversation contests and have multilingual students give performances, thus vigorously arousing the enthusiasm for foreign language study by encouraging all students to turn out with confidence in their foreign language learning.

On the basis of this experience, the university is continuing to explore and apply new methods for further raising the foreign language level of students, thereby raising the quality of education.

Raising the Effectiveness of Teaching

The officials of the Nampo University of Marine Technology are methodically conducting the work to raise the effectiveness of teaching.

What the officials of the university valued was the work of regularly learning the opinions of the graduates working in the relevant units. Through this process, many educators came once again to realize that theory divorced from reality is no different from a book in a library.

On this basis, the university comprehensively reviewed the curriculum plans and aroused the mass of teachers to actively put forward new and innovative proposals.

The teachers are making painstaking efforts to select various indices—problem setting and analytical evaluation, situational judgement and handling, process management, field research and others—so that students can solve by themselves the problems raised in reality, and to put forward methods capable of evaluating their ability.

The devoted efforts of the educators here, who purposefully set major and detailed indices so that the problems raised in reality may be skilfully solved and who heighten the demands so that students may richly possess basic knowledge, major knowledge and knowledge of neighbouring disciplines and boundary fields of science, are leading directly to the improvement of the students' ability.

The university organized experience-sharing meetings of the teachers who had created excellent teaching methods, thereby activating the movement to overtake, learn from and exchange experience with one another. As a result, the achievement was made of successive creation of excellent new teaching methods capable of raising the practical ability of students.

Western Politicians Condemned as Lost in a Pathological Fantasy

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, at a consultative meeting on the 21st, condemned Western politicians as being lost in a pathological fantasy in portraying Russia as an “aggressor”.

He denounced that Western politicians are fabricating the non-existent “Russia threat” theory to frighten their own populations, defining Russia as an aggressor and a principal enemy and straining to realize their pathological fantasy.

He said that in recent times there is not one among the Western senior politicians who has not, at every opportunity, talked about the “Russia threat,” and stressed, however, that Russia has made clear not once or twice that it threatens no one, and still continues to maintain this.

The rally participants exposed that the authorities' staging of large-scale joint military exercises with the United States and the deployment of missiles show that dangerous militarism is reviving.

They chanted slogans such as “Stop blindly following the United States”, “Stop the deployment of long-range missiles”, and “Takaichi must step down at once”.

On that day, rallies of this kind were held in over 300 places across the country.

The Concerning Issue of Rising Global Temperature

The United Nations Environment Programme has made public a shocking fact in connection with the rise in temperature.

The report released by the organization on the 21st points out that the international goal of limiting the rise in temperature compared with pre-industrial times to 1.5℃ cannot be achieved.

In November last year as well, the United Nations Environment Programme published a report to the effect that even if the countries that signed the Paris Agreement on climate change achieve their carbon dioxide emission reduction targets by 2035, the average global temperature will rise by 2.3–2.5℃ compared with the pre-industrial period, and that if urgent measures are not taken, it will rise by 2.8℃ within this century.

The goal of limiting the rise in global temperature to below 1.5℃ compared with the pre-industrial level was set in the Paris Agreement on climate change, which took effect ten years ago.

Yet the temperature rise in 2024 reached 1.55℃ compared with the pre-industrial period, crossing that threshold for the first time.

Last year's global greenhouse gas emissions were 58.4 billion tonnes in carbon dioxide equivalent, almost the same as the previous year. It is reported that to minimize the temperature rise, emissions must be reduced by 18% in 2030 and 45% in 2035 compared with 2025.

But judging by the present situation, the temperature appears set to rise by 2.8℃ in the 21st century.

Even if all countries achieve their individually set national emission reduction targets, the rise will be 2.6℃; and even if emissions and absorptions offset each other, it will rise by 2.1℃.

To bring the excess temperature rise back to 1.5℃, 320 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide must be removed from the atmosphere. But it is the view of environmental experts that the feasibility of this is unclear.

Referring to this, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme asserted: “The more we exceed 1.5℃ and the longer that excess persists, the greater the impact of global warming, such as devastating floods and heatwaves. We must use every means to minimize it.”

The Black Sea, Where Tension Is Worsening Day by Day

Not long ago, the NATO Secretary-General clarified the position of further strengthening military activity in the Black Sea. Saying that NATO has so far strengthened the deployment of forces on its eastern flank, he said that NATO will continue to monitor the security situation in the future and adjust its deterrence and defence posture as necessary.

Tension in the Black Sea waters is worsening day by day. Amidst this, NATO's scheme to further heighten the intensity of pressure on Russia foreshadows an ominous development.

The confrontation between Russia and NATO in the Black Sea becoming acute is attributable to NATO's manoeuvres in rapidly pushing forward the militarization of this region.

Entering the 21st century, NATO has ceaselessly pursued eastward expansion, setting as its goal the construction of an arch-shaped encirclement ring over a broad zone stretching from the Baltic Sea through the Black Sea to the South Caucasus.

Being connected to the Mediterranean on the west and to the Sea of Azov on the east, the Black Sea is a military-strategic point of vantage linking Asia, Europe and Africa. In particular, the Caucasus region situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea is rich in energy resources including gas and crude oil.

Hence NATO expanded its military interference with the aim of weakening Russia's traditional influence in the Black Sea and broadening its own sphere of power.

Even recently, NATO is pushing forward a plan to open new routes for the deployment of new-type weapons and the introduction of troops in Bulgaria and to build a large-scale military base. At present 1,200 NATO forces are permanently stationed in this country. NATO's cutting-edge military technical equipment is also being delivered to Romania. Last year new German “Eurofighter” aircraft were deployed in Poland.

Although it is said that Türkiye, in accordance with the Montreux Convention, has since 2022 not allowed warships of non-littoral countries to pass into the Black Sea, that is nothing but empty words. In recent years NATO's military provocations against Russia in these waters have been strengthened more than ever before. In May this year alone, it frantically conducted a naval military exercise named “OPEX-26” in the Black Sea, and has frequently staged provocative fire-playing uproars such as “Sea Shield”, “Sea Breeze” and “Dacian Fall”.

At present a fierce offensive and defensive battle between Russia and Ukraine is being waged in the Black Sea.

Ukraine, in revenge for its defeat on the battlefield, is indiscriminately attacking Russian merchant ships and tankers, and even striking vessels of foreign nationality with drones and missiles. The Ukrainian drones shot down by Russia's air defence forces in the airspace over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov reach dozens or even hundreds a day. Recently Türkiye's merchant ships were also attacked by Ukraine.

It is a well-known fact that Ukraine's reckless anti-Russian confrontation manoeuvres are being carried out with NATO's active military support through the littoral member states. A case in point is that the port of Constanța in Romania has become a major channel for military support to Ukraine.

Russia has clarified its resolute position to defend the Black Sea coastal area from the West's bellicose plans, and is taking strong countermeasures including strengthening the Black Sea Fleet.

It cannot be predicted what catastrophic consequences NATO's scheme to heighten the intensity of military pressure on Russia under the signboard of “adjusting the deterrence posture” in such a sensitive water area, where the armed forces of the two sides are sharply confronting each other, will bring about.

The fact that British warships intruded into Russian territorial waters in the Black Sea in 2021 and were fired upon with warning shots already suggests that even a minor accidental incident in this region can flare up into the flames of military conflict.

In September the Prime Minister of Slovakia exposed that the West is attempting to turn the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine into a clash between Russia and NATO. In the light of his remarks, too, the Black Sea is clearly being turned by NATO into yet another arena of confrontation against Russia.

World Knowledge

The Montreux Convention

It is an international convention concerning the use of the Black Sea Straits, signed at Montreux in Switzerland on July 20, 1936.

It was concluded among 10 countries including the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Greece and Türkiye. It is also called the Montreux Convention on the Straits Regime.

The convention aims to abrogate the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, which regulated the free navigation of all merchant ships and warships through the Black Sea Straits in peacetime and wartime alike, and to establish a new order of passage.

According to the convention, merchant ships in peacetime have the freedom to pass at any time without going through any formalities, regardless of nationality or the nature of their cargo. Only merchant ships entering the straits through the Aegean Sea or the Black Sea must undergo sanitary inspection at the entrance to the straits in accordance with international sanitary regulations and the relevant regulations of Türkiye.

In the event that Türkiye is in a state of belligerency, merchant ships have the freedom of passage as in peacetime, on condition that they do not assist the enemy; and in the event that a danger of war has been created for Türkiye, on condition that they navigate only by day along the routes designated by this country.

There are no great restrictions on auxiliary warships, but other warships, regardless of nationality and whether in wartime or peacetime, may pass only by day in accordance with strict regulations.

In particular, the restrictive provisions concerning the warships of non-littoral states are stricter. In addition, the convention concretely regulates the order of passage of warships when Türkiye is a belligerent or is in danger of war.

The Montreux Convention, unlike the Treaty of Lausanne, stated that restrictive provisions would be applied to the warships of non-littoral states, but by permitting conditional free navigation it has fatal shortcomings.

In actual fact, the convention failed to prevent the warships of the fascist states from passing through the Black Sea Straits during the Second World War, thereby greatly threatening the security of the littoral states.

For this reason, opinions were raised that this convention should be reviewed, and there was a decision of the Potsdam Conference in July 1945 in this connection, but nothing has changed to this day.
