[Korean Central News Agency] Noteworthy Efforts to Liquidate the Remnants of Colonialism in Africa In many African countries efforts to liquidate the remnants of colonialism and achieve independent development are being strengthened. Ethiopia is devoting efforts to the work of raising the people's sense of unity. In 2006, when it amended the flag proclamation bill, the House of Peoples' Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia proclaimed that Flag Day would be officially commemorated every year on the first Monday of the first week of February by the Ethiopian calendar (around early October). Accordingly, on Flag Day in that country flag-raising ceremonies and marches are held simultaneously at the headquarters of the House of Peoples' Representatives, government organs, military units, schools and overseas missions, and activities to inspire patriotism among the people, including diverse cultural events, are intensively conducted. Recently, at a ceremony marking Flag Day held under the theme "Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity", the Prime Minister of that country appealed to the people to unite and fulfill their common responsibility for the country's prosperity, and mentioned inheriting the legacy of the Battle of Adwa. That battle is one of great historical significance in which the Ethiopian army defeated the Italian aggression army. The Ethiopian Prime Minister stated that the Battle of Adwa, in which the people fought as one against common challenges, was an example that showed the world the power of collective action and national solidarity, and stressed that its legacy continues to demand of every generation that it contribute to safeguarding the future of the country; true devotion to the country begins with individual courage and a spirit of service, and it is important that individuals display the spirit of serving the common cause beyond their own interests. The stand of the Ethiopian government—to carry forward the history and tradition of ending foreign colonial rule with the united strength of the people and to build an independent and prosperous country—is receiving the support of all strata. Burkina Faso is also turning its main attention to eradicating the remnants of the colonial era. As part of this, work is being pushed forward to eliminate colonial bias in education. It is said that the textbooks used by students of that country contain not a few assertions and expressions that praise colonialism and instil a wrong view of history. The Minister of Education pointed out that in the textbooks our victories are never highlighted and that, on the contrary, the focus is placed only on defeats and negative aspects; he stated that the content of education would be reviewed, expressions treating the country's people like children or animals would be deleted, and expressions instilling correct values would be added. A history and geography teacher stated that they would no longer tell of explorers but of invaders, and would reevaluate the African resistance fighters who had been portrayed in old textbooks as tyrants or savages. Accordingly, with the new school year, work is under way to change the content of history, geography and civic education studied by students to anti-colonial content. Last June the government of Burkina Faso, as part of measures to defend its sovereign interests, severed diplomatic relations with France. According to a statement of the Prime Minister's Office, this decision followed a "thorough assessment of the current bilateral relations between Burkina Faso and France". In a letter to the people on the occasion of Independence Day, the President of that country stressed that, with the country's independence, not everything the people had wished for was realized because of constant schemes of domination and plunder, and that many people are suffering from poverty and instability. In the letter he recalled the historical figures who opposed neo-colonialism and sacrificed their lives to defend the country, and appealed to all the people to struggle for the country's development and true independence and thereby build a prosperous and strong country. The efforts of that country to completely cast off the remnants of the old era and open the path of self-style development and prosperity are receiving active welcome from many countries of the continent. In recent years, not a few African countries that were colonies in the past have reestablished relations with their former metropolitan powers, taken their dignified place on the international arena and enhanced their voice. Un Jong Chol, staff reporter World Common Knowledge The Battle of Adwa This is the battle in which the Ethiopian army finally defeated the Italian aggression army on March 1, 1896. Ethiopia, which possesses rich underground resources, has long been an object of aggression and plunder by European colonialists. Italy, which had cast covetous eyes on the East African region, extended its aggressive tentacles deep into Ethiopia's interior by the late 19th century, and in 1885 turned the country into its colony. In 1890 Italy declared that it would exercise "protection" over Ethiopia. The Ethiopian people rose in struggle against Italian colonial rule. The Ethiopian-Italian war that began in 1895 became even fiercer as 1896 began. Between February 29 and March 1, 1896, near the town of Adwa, a final fierce battle took place between the Italian army and the Ethiopian army led by Emperor Menelik II. In this fierce and gruesome battle the Italian army suffered numerous dead and prisoners, including generals and officers, and was miserably defeated by the Ethiopian army. With that as the occasion, the war between the two countries ended, and Italy was compelled to be driven out of Ethiopia. In October 1896 a peace treaty was concluded between Ethiopia and Italy in Addis Ababa, in which Italy unconditionally recognized Ethiopia's complete sovereignty and independence. Staff reporter The Shaken Anti-Russia Union Not long ago a high-ranking official of the European Union (EU) made a statement regarding the issue of admitting Ukraine into the Union. He said that Ukraine is preparing for membership and argued that all member states must smoothly advance this process. This may be called a kind of hint thrown to member states that are not pleased with Ukraine's accession to the EU. Some countries of the EU regard admitting Ukraine into the Union as undesirable. This is because accepting Ukraine—where there are no measures to settle political disorder, the economy has completely collapsed and corruption is rampant—is tantamount to dragging a disaster into the Union. Some high-ranking EU officials have already on several occasions expressed the view that the issue of Ukraine's membership should be completely excluded prospectively. Some countries rejected the proposal to move to the principle of majority voting in deciding on EU accession. This is because of the fear that decisions contrary to their national interests might be taken. In fact, the Ukraine issue may be said to be one of the headaches deepening internal rift in the EU. The friction between Union member states and Ukraine in March is a case in point. At that time Hungary stopped the transit through its territory to Ukraine of important cargo including petrol and diesel. Then Slovakia applied the brakes to the adoption of the EU's 20th anti-Russia sanctions package. This was part of retaliatory measures against Ukraine's blocking of the import of Russian crude oil through the Druzhba pipeline. Although Ukraine has resumed the transport of Russian crude oil through the Druzhba pipeline, the resentment cannot be said to have subsided. Hungary has made clear its stand that it will not provide weapons or troops to Ukraine. Slovakia, too, is consistently raising its voice against support for Ukraine. Amid this, last July Bulgaria took the measure of withdrawing from the "Coalition of the Willing". The "Coalition of the Willing" is an anti-Russia confrontation bloc fabricated by Europe last year for the purpose of strengthening political, economic and military support to Ukraine. Through this bloc Europe has been raging in confrontation with Russia while giving all sorts of support to Ukraine. But even though it ceaselessly pours material and funds, there is no prospect at all of reversing the situation of Ukraine's defeat, and Europe's predicament is worsening day by day. As a result of the reckless anti-Russia sanctions, the financial situation of European countries has deteriorated extremely, and this has deepened political instability, so that even regime changes have become frequent in many European countries recently. Bulgaria, proceeding from the fact that it cannot indefinitely bear the socio-economic losses that are growing ever more serious owing to the intensified confrontation with Russia, clearly stated its stand that it would not participate in the coalition that insists on continuing financial and military support to Ukraine, and took the measure of withdrawing from the "Coalition of the Willing". Earlier that country officially stated that it would no longer provide weapons to Ukraine. The internal situation of the already unstable EU is taking on an even more complex aspect. Regarding the present situation of the EU, where internal contradictions are becoming acute, experts believe that a restructuring of the EU may proceed. There is also a view that individual countries may withdraw from the Union. The unstable situation of the EU is the inevitable consequence of the vain miscalculation of seeking to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia through Ukraine's hands. Staff reporter Russian President States He Will Respond to Accusations by European Countries Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an interview on the 25th, stated that Russia will respond to the anti-Russian accusations of European countries. He pointed out that the accusation that Russia is instigating mass unrest in Europe's major cities is clearly a wrong move, and said that this shows that some European politicians are weak and do not know how to take responsibility for what is happening. Exposing that they do not think of analyzing the situation and finding its causes but are looking for someone on whom to shift the blame, he brought to light that the protest actions taking place in European capitals are attributable to the excessive state debt and to the mistakes those countries themselves have committed. He stressed that the Russian government will not ignore or overlook the accusations against his country in connection with the disorder in Europe and will certainly respond. He also said that Russia has never refused energy supplies to European countries and that, on the contrary, they themselves are refusing them, and asserted that Europe's policy of seeking to ban everything Russian is truly foolish and feeble. [Korean Central News Agency] Japanese Reactionaries Accused of Denying Aggression Crimes A spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs answered a reporter's question on the 27th in connection with the recent opening at the UN Headquarters of a photo exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of the start of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE), held under the theme "For Justice and Peace of Mankind". The spokesman stated that the IMTFE is a historic trial in which peace tamed violence and justice prevailed over evil, and an important component of the postwar international order; recognizing and accepting it constitutes the precondition for postwar Japan's return to the international community. He stressed that what must be guarded against is that, today, 80 years later, the Japanese right-wing forces ignore the historical conclusion of the IMTFE, strive to deny and even glorify the crimes of aggression, and that the international community must jointly reject Japan's schemes to spread a wrong view of history and openly idolize war criminals. [Korean Central News Agency] NATO's Reckless Military Exercise Commotion NATO conducted its largest-scale force deployment exercise in eastern Latvia. In the exercise held from the 26th to the 28th, about 3,000 troops of the NATO forces stationed in Latvia and numerous items of military equipment were mobilized. It is said that in this exercise the NATO forces practised manoeuvre and supply capabilities and long-distance coordination capabilities. NATO's reckless war exercise commotion is further intensifying the military tension in the region. [Korean Central News Agency] Statement Issued Opposing Unilateral Economic Sanctions The parliaments of the BRICS member states, at the end of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum recently held in India, issued a joint statement opposing unilateral economic sanctions. The statement said that coercive measures such as unilateral economic sanctions contrary to international law are having negative consequences for the health and food security of the inhabitants of the countries concerned, and appealed for the lifting of these illegal measures that erode the purposes and principles of international law and the UN Charter. The statement also stressed that it resolutely condemns all acts violating international humanitarian law, including deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian objects in the territories of member states. [Korean Central News Agency] Call to Protect Children by Ending Wars The Permanent Representative of China to the UN, speaking on the 26th at an open meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the issue of children and armed conflict, appealed to protect children by ending wars. He said that the most direct and effective way to protect children is precisely to put a speedy end to conflict and violence, and strongly demanded that all parties to conflicts thoroughly observe the fundamental purposes and principles of the UN Charter, stop hostilities and refrain from attacking children, schools and other civilians and civilian facilities. He also stressed that the delivery of humanitarian assistance must be increased and the conditions for access to conflict areas improved so as to guarantee that children receive the necessary assistance in good time.
